The best possible way of keeping untreated timber maintained is to apply a spirit-based stain of at least 3 coats every two to three years to stop any flaking of the stain you have already applied. UV protect spirit stain (Sikkens Filter 7) is the most suitable for untreated timber and by no means is any water based treatment suitable for untreated timber what-so-ever.

Our recommended choice of treatment/preservative is Sikkens HLS for the base coat, followed by Sikkens Filter 7 for addition the top coats. Spirit stains can be purchased from your local DIY store or online.  It is only suitable to stain and preserve any timber products purchased from All-Gates UK Limited before any installation in taken place, making sure no moisture has done damage prior. It doesn't have to rain to allow moisture to enter the timber itself.  Before treating, store in a cool and dry place reducing any chance of moisture entering the timber.  We recommend to use a brush when treating the timber, carefully following the grains of the timber where possible.
